Trio Mossoró – Me Case Mamãe from Forró do Velho Inácio - Copacabana/Som 1975

Trio Mossoró – Me Case Mamãe from Forró do Velho Inácio - Copacabana/Som 1975

This is the first appearance by the Trio on my blog. The group began in 1956 and recorded their first album in 1962, followed by multiple LPs and compactos on a variety of labels. The Marinês-flavored Me Case Mamãe is an exceptional Trio Mossoró tune on SOM, a label that did not typically release forró. Trio Mossoró also shared lead vocals, which was equally atypical for this genre.

Part Three: Borrachinha - Bruxaria & Que Vontade De Comer Goiaba - Columbia 78rpm 1958

Much of Borrachinha's catalog has been lost to time. Very few of his 78s, even as digital files on blogs, YouTube or Soundcloud, are in circulation amongst collectors. Apparently, there is a lost album which was pressed, but hasn't appeared. This post includes both sides of his Columbia 78 from 1958. Borrachinha has a lot in common with Gordurinha, who were both affiliated with Jackson Do Pandeiro. Their presentation, phrasing and sound belong to a specific family of "cool" forró recordings that were popular in the late 50s and early 60s.

Part Two: Borrachinha e Alventino Cavalcante - Tataitão, Adeus… adeus & Pudim de Maria from Alegria do Norte - Fantasia

Part Two: Borrachinha e Alventino Cavalcante - Tataitão, Adeus… adeus & Pudim de Maria from Alegria do Norte - Fantasia 196?

Alegria Do Norte, a single album with a separate side for Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante, is extraordinary. In my opinion, it is easily one of the top 10 finest forró LPs. One of the reasons why it is so fantastic is that it is not strictly forró. Like most musical genres, it touches on many forms of Brazilian music, including embolada, samba and choro. Forró can be painted with many hues. It can be hard and aggressive. With a few instruments replaced, it can be softened and more casual. Alegria do Norte is forró with hazier, acoustic edges. One might even describe it as "cool". Both Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante did not record very many albums. Borrachinha's entire body of work, outside of this album, was limited to compilation LPs and 78rpm records from the late 50s and early 60s (Although there may be a rare, somewhat unknown LP.). Cavalcante (also spelled Cavalcanti) had 2 solo albums and appeared on a number of compilations. The release date of Alegria do Norte does not appear on the sleeve or LP. It is likely that it was recorded in the early 1960s. Both Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante appeared on 2 multi-artist, collaborative live Philips LPs called São João No Brejo with Jackson do Pandeiro, from 1964 and volume 2, likely from 1965. Alegria do Norte is a magical record with wonderful melodies, seductive phrasing and mystery. It is truly a holy grail forró album.

Ary Lobo - Nego São and Terra de Ninguém from Quem é o Campeão & compacto - RCA Victor 1966

Ary Lobo's work on RCA is fantastic. Singles / 45s (although they play at 33 1/3) called compactos in Brazil are extremely scarce. Compactos were promo-only and were mainly sent to radio stations, which is why they are coveted. A few of Lobo's compactos contained exclusive material, but both sides of this single are from Ary's brilliant final RCA album, Quem é o Campeão. The album blended Ary Lobo's exquisite phrasing with thick, gooey jazz, samba and the haunting feel of nordeste folk.

Part One: Alventino Cavalcanti - Chapéu De Couro from E Muita Cantiga Nordestina - Fontana 1968

Part One: Alventino Cavalcanti - Chapéu De Couro from E Muita Cantiga Nordestina - Fontana 1968

In the forró world, most of the musicians lucky enough to release records got very little money or fame for their work. Forró stars were like early North American sports heroes. They worked hard to make a living and even those who were famous were not extravagantly paid. Even 50 years later, many amazing musicians are only celebrated by a handful of collectors.

Alventino Cavalcanti (also spelled Cavalcante) was one of the forró greats, who's reputation is growing 50 years after his recorded output ended. His catalog was negligible compared to Jackson do Pandeiro. Cavalcanti recorded 2 solo LPs and a handful of compilation LPs. His album with Borrachinha, Alegria Do Norte, may be the finest forró album ever released and also one of the rarest. His records transcend the dance floor thanks to the softening of edges with hypnotic, mostly acoustic production. E Muita Cantiga Nordestina was released by Fontana records in 1968. This was his final solo LP of 2. It's a shame that there weren't more, because he was clearly a cut above many artists who received multiple releases.

Jackson do Pandeiro - Lá Vai A Boiada - from A Braza Do Norte - Cantagalo - 1967

Lá Vai A Boiada is a wonderful, classic Jackson do Pandeiro track from his rare Cantagalo LP, A Braza Do Norte. The late 60s were an odd time for Jackson. His career was in a slump. Jackson's albums were largely unheard in Brazil and relegated to smaller labels between 1966 and 1970. He and Almira split. He got in a terrible car accident in January 1968. Jackson's genius never wavered. The first 15 years of his career were simply a warm up for his classic run of LPs on CBS in the early 1970s.

Osvaldo Oliveira - Cinzas Da Fogueira- from Pau de Sebo Vol 03– CBS 1969

Osvaldo Oliveira - Cinzas Da Fogueira- from Pau de Sebo Vol 03 – CBS 1969

This is Osvaldo Oliveira's second entry on forroLPgringo. Before 1970, Oliveira wrote and recorded quite a few classic forró songs and 3 fantastic LPs. Oliveira's entry on Pau De Sebo Volume 3 is a lively number full of the tricky phrasing representative of this classic period in his career. It teeters towards the slightly tacky, like some forró can, but is saved by Osvaldo's Oliveira's monstrous bravado.
