Trio Nordestino – Xaxado No Pé from Vamos Xamegá - CBS 1967 - Tropicana (reissue) 1973

Trio Nordestino – Xaxado No Pé from Vamos Xamegá - CBS 1967 - Tropicana (reissue) 1973

Trio Nordestino LPs are some of the easiest to find. It is probable that we will never know the exact pressing numbers for most Brazilian LPs, but it seems likely that print runs for Trio Nordestino were larger than with most forró stars. Vamos Xamegá was originally published in 1967 on CBS and reissued on CBS subsidiary Tropicana in 1973. Reissues were rare in forró, which is another indication that the Trio were an exceptionally successful act. Although a lot of Trio Nordestino material is on the mellow side, Xaxado No Pé cooks.

Gordurinha - Baiano Burro Nasce Morto from Gordurinha Tá Na Praça - Continental 1960

Gordurinha - Baiano Burro Nasce Morto from Gordurinha Tá Na Praça - Continental 1960

Gordurinha means fatso in PortugueseThe skinny fellow's real name was Waldeck Artur Macedo. This is Gordurinha's first appearance on my blog, thanks to a recommendation from a friend and fellow collector Sindei. The brilliant Gordurinha died from an overdose at age 47 in 1969. His recording career, spanning 1958-1963, was painfully short. He recorded very little after the military coup in 1964, which he staunchly opposed. He may be the earliest forró giant to pass on. His most famous composition was Chiclete Com Banana, which was arguably the most famous composition of the co-writer, Jackson do Pandiero. Chiclete Com Banana just scratches the surface of Gordurinha's wonderful recorded work. Below is a film of Gordurinha performing Baiano Burro Nasce Morto. I replaced the murky audio from a rare YouTube clip with a top shelf vinyl transfer, although the sync is slightly off.

Raimundo Nonato - Saudade do Piauí from Chá Da Bahia - Tropicana (1976)

Raimundo Nonato - Saudade do Piauí from Chá Da Bahia - Tropicana (1976)

Raimundo Nonato's vinyl catalogue is fairly rare because most of his LPs were pressed on small labels like California in the 60's followed by Nortson, RN Discos & Tropicana in the 70s and 80s. There is very little historical information on the web about Mr. Nonato, aside from the fact that he was born in Paraíba and was named after Saint. Saudade do Piauí, from this rare Tropicana LP from 1976 is, as Luiz Gonzaga would say, damn good.
