Part Two: Borrachinha e Alventino Cavalcante - Tataitão, Adeus… adeus & Pudim de Maria from Alegria do Norte - Fantasia 196?
Alegria Do Norte, a single album with a separate side for Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante, is extraordinary. In my opinion, it is easily one of the top 10 finest forró LPs. One of the reasons why it is so fantastic is that it is not strictly forró. Like most musical genres, it touches on many forms of Brazilian music, including embolada, samba and choro. Forró can be painted with many hues. It can be hard and aggressive. With a few instruments replaced, it can be softened and more casual. Alegria do Norte is forró with hazier, acoustic edges. One might even describe it as "cool". Both Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante did not record very many albums. Borrachinha's entire body of work, outside of this album, was limited to compilation LPs and 78rpm records from the late 50s and early 60s (Although there may be a rare, somewhat unknown LP.). Cavalcante (also spelled Cavalcanti) had 2 solo albums and appeared on a number of compilations. The release date of Alegria do Norte does not appear on the sleeve or LP. It is likely that it was recorded in the early 1960s. Both Borrachinha and Alventino Cavalcante appeared on 2 multi-artist, collaborative live Philips LPs called São João No Brejo with Jackson do Pandeiro, from 1964 and volume 2, likely from 1965. Alegria do Norte is a magical record with wonderful melodies, seductive phrasing and mystery. It is truly a holy grail forró album.
